Grass is Dead with Pappy Biondo, Live at Nectar's, Burlington, VT. January 30th, 2018.

Hello friends near and far. Hope things are well for you. The end of January marks 6 months, a whole half of a year, since I made the herculean haul of myself, my dog, and my possessions to the Green Mountain State. And what better way to celebrate than some Dead music via the high and lonesome sound of Bill Monroe. Grass is Dead, Live at Nectar’s, Burlington, VT.
Every Tuesday night at Nectar’s is Dead Set and this week they had Grass is Dead, hailing from Florida. It was a four piece tonight. The dobro player, Jared Womack, was really good. The sound of his instrument along with pedals and other effects was very nice. Billy Gilmore was lead singer for most tunes and commanded the stage with the Acoustic guitar, fiddle, and 3 different banjos. I wasn’t too close to the stage, so I am going to say definitely a 4 string and 6 string. The bass player, who is not the guy on the website, played an upright bass and sang a few songs. The drummer was solid. And last but not least, Pappy Biondo, of Gates Blancos fame, sitting in all night. Absolute bliss. Amazing to watch his reactions to the other musicians but especially Billy.
I was having too much fun to keep a proper setlist so I will just talk about the highlights, which were plentiful. I loved their arrangement of I Know You Rider. I tend to judge bands based on their treatment of this song. New Oxford PA’s own Strive used to crush it back in the day. Anyway, the lyrics were at a slow pace but them they kicked out the jams with some serious triple time jams. So freaking good. Mam Tried, Midnight Moonlight, and Bertha were really good. They did a long Dark Star to start the second set off.  Brown Eyed Women had some serious jams and space. Most of the songs were rather long for bluegrass based tunes, and not an untz in sight. The encore of Ripple, performed in the crowd, was the icing on the cake.
Up next on Thursday, February 1st, the opening night of the Pappy and the Pards month long residency at Nectar’s. The music scene up here is incredible and feel truly blessed to be living in a place where music is so central.

Gatos Blacos, Live at Hostel Traverse, Jan. 19th, 2018

Hello everybody! Hope you are doing well. I am rapidly approaching the 6 month mark of living in the Green Mountain State. So far, so good. But I do work a lot. So I miss out on a lot of stuff. But after the Cabinet show in December and talking to Pappy, I had to go see Gatos Blancos in 3 weeks. And without further ado, here is Gatos Blancos, Live at the Hostel Traverse in Warren, VT Jan. 19th, 2018.
Gatos Blancos is one of Pappy’s many projects. They are doing a 3 show run and since Pappy lives in this neck of the woods, the first show was in state. Warren is a tiny little village in the valley of the Mad River valley area. The elevation of this valley? About 700 feet. Burlington is in another valley, elevation sea level. Weather was clear and dry. Definitely would have been a different experience if it was storming. But super pumped for first in state road trip to see music.
Went through 3 or 4 villages after getting off the Interstate. Driving in Vermont is unique. In between the villages, its 55 mph. Then as you get closer, it drops to 40, then 30, then 25. And 25 through the whole village. Every village has a general store and NONE of them are open 24 hours. Found this out the hard way as I was starving after the show and nothing was open until I hit Burlington. It’s like going back in time. I love it.
The hostel was above the bar and performance area, which was just someone’s living room. Seriously, this place is really small. I mean smaller than the main area of Kclinger’s back in the day. The main room, 25 by 50 feet. Another smaller room with a bar. Everything still covered in snow outside. Nice and cozy inside. Met and talked with entire band. Keyboardist is Al Smith, from York PA of all places. Says he plays at the Circle on the Wed. Night Blues Jam.
Justin Mazer is also originally from Scranton but lives in Vermont now. Both Justin and Pappy played the Dead Set last Tuesday. They absolutely crushed Maggie’s farm, using the arrangement Dylan used at the Newport Folk Fest in 1965. He also was throwing down some serious Mike Bloomfield licks and when I asked him about it, he didn’t know about the arrangement but was totally into Bloomfield.
     Pappy recognized me!
Dylan the bass player is also a Scranton native and former member of Cabinet. Very chill but super kind. Totally remembered the Snail Pie Lounge show. And last but not least, Russ Lawton. He is best known as the original drummer for Trey Band. Super cool and nice.
I also know the guy taping and running the sound. He is an old school Phish head who has done a lot of taping in his day. During the first song, he asked me how it sounded mix wise, just like I was asked about back in Hanover. I HAVE FOUND MY HOME.

Gatos Blancos,
Set 1
Crazy Mama, They Call Me the Breeze, Ray Moore’s Blues, Blues for Roy, Lucille, Sunrise in Vergennes, Bangkok 45, Freddie’s Tune, Cocaine, Angel
Cajun Moon, Heavy Rain , Hey Baby, Cool River, Happy birthday, Catfish John, Lies, Lies, Lies, Travelin Light

You can stream it here

The setlist is really close to being accurate. Might have missed a tune or two. A lot of JJ Cale sprinkled throughout. The arrangement of Lucille, a Little Richard tune, was very different and outstanding. The Gatos originals, Bangkok 45 and Sunrise in Vergennes are really good. The second to last song in the set made myself exclaim, “That Cocaine was fantastic” Note to self, don’t say this out loud, people may judge. Besides banjo, Pappy also played steel pedal for a few tunes. But the tones Justin was getting were out of this world. Several times I opened my eyes expecting to see Pappy at the steel pedal but it was Justin getting those beautiful ringing notes out of his guitar.
Second set, after a long set break, was even better. Cajun Moon had a real up beat bluesy feel. Heavy Rain and Cool River were a nice surprise, being Cabinet tunes. I am glad that Cabinet tunes are not going on the shelf. Hearing a band do Travelin’ Light that isn’t named Widespread Panic was a true pleasure.
Mad props to Phil for taping and doing an excellent job with the sound. I also went to a party on Sat. at a Most Wonderful Place that totally lives up to its name. Hobbs got to meet 6 other dogs and because he was smaller than all of them, dominance was not an issue. And my vegan pulled pork bbq was a big hit. Can’t wait to visit that place once it is summer. It rains all spring up here. Up next, although I may not write about it, Dead Set with Grateful Grass at my bar, Nectar’s.

Cabinet with special guests Serene Green, Live at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge, S. Burlington, VT Dec. 29th, 2017

Hello everybody! Hope you are surviving the Deep Freeze. It is crazy cold up here. But not even subzero highs, today and tomorrow, can stop Tour. And today I unleash a tale so crazy even Dave Kemp MT is interested. For maybe my last time ever, it’s honest to goodness coal country bluegrass, from the land of epic floods and eternal underground fires. It’s Cabinet, live at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge, Dec. 29th, South Burlington, VT.
I knew I wasn’t going anywhere for NYE this year so when this was announced I was geeked beyond belief. Since Pappy lives up here, Burlington has been a constant stop on their tours. Got to the venue super early and hung out with an old school taper. Through him, meet some other old heads. When I said I moved up from PA in July, they remarked how they had just been in York to see the Steep Canyon Rangers. They know the guy who runs the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival. That guy calls Hanover Klanover lol. Most of them don’t go see Phish anymore because it’s not what it was… when they would see them in bars in Vermont. Now that is a jaded vet. But they were all super cool.
I got to talk to Pappy and JP before the show. They just happened to be out hanging out back where I was. Both of them remembered the Snail Pie Lounge show in Glen Rock. And both loved the fact I congratulated them on the hiatus. It is a truly an enormous achievement to have a band go 11 years. If they are really done, then they have gone out on top. If they come back in 5 years, their legend will have only grown. Never even got around to telling JP I was from NE PA.
Serene Green opened. They are another PA bluegrass act but much more traditional. One mic and no drummer, the way Bill Monroe intended.
You can stream their show here

Serene Green, Live at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge, December 29th, 2017

Clinch Mountain Backstep, Holding You Closely, no Whiskey Man, To Whom It Pertains, Hop Bottom, Fed and Free, World’s Most Interesting Man, Cattle in the Can, Diggin’ a Hole, Don’t Let Me Fall, Misery Breakdown
They were the perfect opening act for Cabinet. Love that traditional sound. Pappy even joined them for one number.

Cabinet, Live at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge, December 29th, 2017

Caroline, Po’s Real, The Tower, Cut Down Tree, Oxygen, The Dove, Mysterio, Miss Molly, Pine Billy, Sunday 60 Breakdown, Pig in a Pen, Old Farmer’s Mill, Susquehanna Breakdown, Cool River, Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow, Heavy Rain

The first 3 are older tunes and it was like a greatest hits for me. The whole show from start to end was just fantastic. One thing I have noticed about Cabinet’s evolution is they are definitely more electric than they were 3 years ago. Distortion on Todd’s fiddle and Micky playing the electric guitar more. I think it’s a good thing because no one likes a band that doesn’t evolve.
So there you have it. It has been an absolute pleasure beyond description to see and listen to Cabinet over the last 7 years. I have no idea what their future holds but their legacy is one that will last through the ages. Next up, one of Pappy’s many side projects, Gatos Blancos in Warren VT on Jan 19th. It will also be my first road trip to a show in the great state of Vermont. I love it up here and so glad the crazy year of 2017 sprung me up to the Green Mountain State.
