Jagg Off: A Mick Jagger Birthday Spectacular feat. Josh Panda, July 12th, 2019

     Hello people. Been quite a while since I have written anything. No particular reason. I have seen a bunch of shows since I moved downtown and have a more normal Monday through Friday schedule.  July will make 2 years of being up here and a few annual events I have attended twice now. This post is about the annual Jagg Off :A Birthday Celebration for Mick Jagger. Last year had Seth Yacavone and Dave Grippo tearing it up. But because Burlington has such an amazing music scene, Joshua Panda and his buddies got the honor this year. Kempepedia is proud to present Jagg Off. Live at Nectar’s July 12^th, 2019.

    I fucking love the Rolling Stones. I have seen them twice, 1994 and 2005. I feel that their run of Beggar’s Banquet through Exile on Main Street is the best 4 album run any band has ever had. I once upon a time had over 10 live show from their 1972 tour. To be honest, the sound quality on some of the audience recordings was horrible, which is why they are gone now. I also dropped 30 bucks back in the late 90’s to get a black and white VHS copy of the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus……which they then released officially on DVD in color the next year. So I really like the Stones.

     Joshua Panda has a vocal range that is out of this world. 2 guitarists for most of show. Sax player who did a lot of the seasoning, shakers, maracas, the cowbell etc. Didn’t know any of the other musicians but they were all amazing. Loved they did Carol, a Chuck Berry tune the Stones covered early in their career but was a staple of their live show for years after. They knew the most important thing when covering Sympathy is ….don’t overdo the Woo’s. They had just the right amount. They also had another guitarist join them for Sympathy and Sway.

  If its a birthday party for Mick Jagger, you know there will be cake. This is a replica of the cover of Let It Bleed. They did give out pieces later. 

They had a Mick Jagger Dance Off at set break. I am old school when it comes to my Jagger moves. During the 1969 tour, he took his belt off and whipped the stage during Midnight Rambler. His early moves were great too.

      Monkeyman, one of my favorite Stone songs, killed it. I have seen Monkeyman performed by The Stones, Phish, and Devolver. At Superball I recognized right away and flipped the fuck out. I was screaming, jumping around, acting like a fool. My friend overheard 2 people talking:

Guy 1: What song is this?
Guy 2: I don’t know but it must be a big deal. That guy is going crazy

The jam at the end of Knockin’ was super dialed in. All high energy blasts, one after another. They didn’t do an encore which means I got to leave a little bit earlier and get some shuteye because I had the highly anticipated Cosmosis Jones reunion show at Nectar’s along with Dr. Fameous at Nectar’s the following night.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today, Widespread Panic, Live at the Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA April 10th, 1999

     Hello everyone. I hope you have survived winter (that needs to be said when you live this far North) and are enjoying the emergence of spring. I haven’t written anything in my It Was 20 Years Ago Today series because while it has been 20 years for a lot of shows, not too many of them were super memorable. But boy is this one. This one has got it all, strip clubs, bachelor parties, fashion, and Widespread Panic. So without further ado, It Was 20 Years Ago Today, Widespread Panic, Live at the Electric Factory, Philadelphia, PA 4/10/99.

     My buddy, DJ, was getting married at the end of April and wanted to do something for a bachelor party but DID NOT want a party with strippers, drugs, and general debauchery. I believe I came up with the idea of going to see Panic. DJ is a full blown deadhead and had liked WSP more than Phish so this was perfect. Maybe 5 of us were planning on attending.

    A few of Dj’s friends who lived in Philly were going too but they were not really into the music scene.  One of them, Mr X, also had a very green thumb. Remember, this was back in 1999 and really dank bud was hard to come by. Not like today, where one can get it delivered to one’s front door. Oh you can’t do that in PA? That’s why I live in Vermont.

     We had to meet up with Mr. X before the show. We got to a friend’s place in Philly and waited…and waited…and waited. Seriously, he was very late and anyone who knows me knows I HATE getting to a show late. Evidently, Mr. X couldn’t decide what outfit to wear. Like I said, not really into the music.

     He finally arrived and it was definitely worth the wait. But now we were late. I mean really late. We got on I -76 and the traffic was terrible. Mr. X was driving and decided the quickest way was to go the wrong way on an on ramp to get off the Surekill ( I mean the Schuykill) expressway. While I wouldn’t recommend it, it worked and we finally arrived at the Electric Factory.

Remember what I said about being late? We got there as Greta was ending. I was so pissed. LGDTB is a song I really wanted to hear. I was late for another WSP show in 1998, so I had missed the equivalent of an entire set. The second set was really rocking so that eased the pain.

     After the show, Mr. X insisted that we go to a strip club. The first one we went to they denied everyone entry except Jake. He had a shirt with a collar on it so that made him worthy. So then we went to a really crappy place, right along I-76, We weren’t in the door 5 minutes and Mr. X comes up and asks me to kick in some money for a lap dance for DJ. I did but replied that DJ did not want anything to do with strippers. I turn around and DJ is right in front of me asking “What did Mr. X ask you?” DJ did behave and turn down the offered lap dance. Pretty sure Mr. X took it.

     I hope whatever you did for your bachelor/bachelorette party was almost as much fun as we had seeing the jamband titans of the South.

Lamp. Live at Nectar's, Burlington, VT Dec 1st, 2018

     Hello everyone. I hope you are having a splendid Sunday. I rarely have off Sunday AM but am making the most of it. Just watched a great football match between my Tottenham Hotspurs and Arsenal. They first played each other in 1887. And while my vegan Italian sausages are steaming, I have some time to jot down a few thoughts on an amazing Saturday night in the BVT. Kempepedia is proud to present Lamp, Live at Nectar’s, Burlington, VT Dec. 1^st, 2018

     When this show was announced, I knew I had to attend. It was a one time only group. It featured Russ and Ray who have a duo called Soule Monde. Just keyboards and drums but WOW, are they freaking amazing. Russ gets all sorts of percussive sounds rolling and Ray is up on his feet, practically dancing while he plays. Check them out

     I haven’t had a chance to check them out live yet. I did see them both as one of Pappy’s bands at his residency back in February. But the addition of guitarist extraordinaire Scott Metzger makes it LAMP. It was SO much more crowded than I had ever seen it. Definitely a difference from a Tuesday or Thursday night. While waiting to get in, I overheard the people in front of me were remarking that they had been to Vermont but never to Nectar’s. Another over heard conversation was about the amount of people that rolled up from NYC for the show. I would fully expect a show like this to be in Brooklyn. But its wasn’t. it was a 20 minute walk from my crib.

     Feel very blessed to live in a city with such a vibrant live music scene. Rock and Roll!

     Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying this first blast of winter. I know many of my friends in PA got crushed by a few inches of snow. We are expecting 5 to 9 inches today, with more in the mountains. Which is fantastic, as I just bought my helmet and goggles and am all ready to start skiing. But I’m not here to talk about this November but November 1998, long before I ever imagined moving to Vermont. But I still attended what were considered hometown shows.  So without further ado, Kempepedia is proud to present It Was 20 Years Ago Today, Phish Live at the Centrum, Worcester, MA November 27^th and 28^th, 1998.

    After hitting the Thanksgiving run in 1997, there was no way I was missing this one. While Phish’s sound had evolved over the course of 1998, they were still on fire this Fall tour even if it didn’t reach the almost unreachable heights of Fall 1997. This time I went with Jared and his wife. Jared was my landlord at the time and the only Italian hillbilly I have ever met.

     Highlight of the first set is Carini. Although it’s not the beast it would become, it still is really heavy. It also references an incident a few weeks prior when a naked guy was on stage. And it wasn’t Fishman.

    The second set is one big long song. Don’t believe me? Every song goes into one another and a whole lotta Wipe Out. The band was one fire and having a hell of a good time. Jams and wackiness, definitely Phish at its best. The Mike’s is very evil and Weekapaugh has so many peaks one cannot keep track. A triple encore to send us off into the night is the icing on the cake.

     Typical 1998 goodness here. The Disease is a nice first set treat. Moma had some nice funky licks and Melt made everyone’s brain split open and melt. Julius was stretched out and paired perfectly with Wolfman’s. Mule had a cool but rather long duel with Mike and Trey. While a Tweezer this late in the second set is unusual, it has more than a few amazing moments. Just like 1997, I skipped the final night. Really wish I hadn’t.  All the Pain and Layla featuring Vermont guitar genius Seth Yacavone were outstanding. The man’s voice and guitar playing are from another universe. I had to wait 19 years to see him playing in person, but it was definitely worth the wait. The Dead Set I saw him lead on July 3^rd was among the best things I have seen up here. He sings and plays like he sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in the Northeast Kingdom.

     So there it is. My second and last (so far) birthday Phish shows. Feel so lucky to have seen what I saw in 1.0 which just ads to my street cred living in the amazing city of Burlington Vermont. Up next, a Dead Set birthday show with the incredible Zach Nugent leading the proceedings.

     Hello everyone. Hope things are good in your hood. Winter temps have arrived right on schedule with it getting down to 11 degrees tonight. Last was cold and smoking hot, all at the same time. Why? Because Dark Star Orchestra was paying a visit to Burlington on a Tuesday night, the same night of the week as Dead Set at Nectar’s. 2 different dead acts in town. The next day off from both jobs and its Switzer’s birthday. I am all over that like brown on rice. So with no further delay, Kempepedia is proud to present Dark Star Orchestra Live at the Higher Ground and Dead Set at Nectar’s, Nov. 13^th, 2018.

    My crew was going to go to DSO to celebrate Switzer’s birthday but then plans changed and they couldn’t go. Ghost Light on Sat. worked better for them and she could get a free ticket for hanging posters. So she hung posters downtown in temps in the teens and ran into Mike Gordon. So I had to rage even harder in their absence. Management is on it.

   The DSO show was sold out and very crowded. They opened the showcase lounge and played the audio so people would have space to dance.

     Whole show had 1974 vide. The Dark Star and the incorporated jams were AMAZING. Words can’t do it justice. I saw 2 mike stands so hopefully a recording will surface. The Eyes had the ’74 eyes jam and the China Cat transition was very reminiscent of how they did it in 1974. I knew it wasn’t an actual show as the Dead never performed Pride live.Loved Two Souls , a rarely performed Pigpen ballad. The crowd definitely skewed older. As a wise man said, it can be intimidating to go to Nectar’s while they can go to an HG show, which starts earlier, and still make it to work the next day. I left towards the end of the show because I didn’t want to wait for an Uber. On to Nectar’s.

      I got there and headed up stairs. The vast majority of shows I have seen there have been downstairs. The upstairs is called Club Metronome and that is where the first Phish gig was. It is much bigger than the downstairs so lots more room to dance. And they have a coat rack! It’s all about the simple things.

      I walked after the first verse of Franklin’s Tower and it was raging. The energy was so much higher for whatever reason and I worked out a lot of aggression in the most positive way possible. They shredded it up and down until a peak like a mini volcanic eruption. We all needed a break after that.

    For the second set, Rob Eaton of DSO came out. He is originally from Vermont and the band then laid waste to all our minds, bodies, and souls.

Set 2: Scarlet>Fire, Shakedown St.

 Over an hour.

During Scarlet there was a cool little breakdown where the 2 drummers, the incredibly talented Russ Lawton and Ryan Clausen of Haley Jane and the Primates, or as they are known on the street as Clawton, did a fantastic calypso thing. Just high powered pure energy emanating from some secret place only masters can unlock.

     Feel so grateful and blessed how things are going up here. I know enough people now as they say hi to me at shows, which is great as I dance alot with my eyes closed. It has been a great November. A visit from PA friends the first weekend, a harvest party with a genetics swap the next weekend. Don’t forget, cannabis is legal up here. Thanksgiving next week at the Talberts and my annual thanksgiving yoga class. Been here a little over a year and already have a tradition. And then the November 27^th Dead Set is my birthday show as I turn 46 at midnight. Yipyaw!

     Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying this chilly arrival of fall. The foliage season is peaking and it is crisp up here in the land of maple syrup. Low 30’s tonight. Mt Mansfield has visible snow on it. And what better way to celebrate the harvest season than with one of the oldest rituals known to our scene, Fall Tour Opener. Fall tours with Halloween shows are even better. And with the opener just a mere 3 hours away, you know I am there. Kempepedia is proud to present Phish, Oct. 16^th and 17^th, 2018, Albany NY.

     Not sure if I have ever been as pumped for shows like I was for the 2 nights in Albany. After the soul crushing heartbreak of the cancellation of the Blueballs Festival, I really need to see some live Phish. Dick’s was out of the question. But an opening 2 night run in Albany? That is totally doable. The last and only time I have ever been to a show in Albany was the tour opener in Sept. 2000, right before the first hiatus. I was going with my normal crew but even though we all live in Burlington now, due to logistics, we were meeting at the hotel just like we would when I still lived in PA.  And the hotel? 5 minute walk to venue and a room with a veranda.

   Moma is a great opener, lots of dancing. The Tube definitely had a jam in it of several minutes before going back into the verses. Everything’s Right had some great stuff in it. Some of Trey’s newer tones go so well with Page’s clavinet it’s almost obscene. The transition into Cities was stellar. WTC rocked out the way it always does.

     I had genuine floor seats. I think the last time I had floors for an east coast show was 12/11/99 at the old Spectrum. The vibe was just fantastic. The crew next to us were from Vermont and NOBODY was yapping or even really singing along, everyone was just there to dance their asses off. The Ghost kicked off the set and was devastating. Lots of evil Phish with the light rig going up and down. It gave the illusion of the stage rising. So much awesomeness within a short span. No wasted notes. No Man’s was more of a spacer journey but still delivered. 20 Years>Show of Life was insane. 20 Years had a lot of evil Phish as well.  Definitely in the running for best Show of Life ever. End jam had so much energy. There was an after show with a bunch of Burlington musicians playing soul music. I joked they took a Nectar’s show and placed it in Albany. While I didn’t make the show, I did see a video where the owner of Nectar’s sang a song with them. So it REALLY was a transplanted Nectar’s show.

     J had called the Crowd Control opener…. For the first night. But he still gets credit. Chalk Dust was more exploratory than a normal first set CDT. Wolfman’s was good as always. We were in the second level right above Page and got to see the Mule choreography really well. Steam was great with the steam and the lights. Also saw all that goes into a Fish vacuum solo. Where they keep vacuum and vacuum mic. How Trey has to rush to get to the drum kit and then the mic. S remarked the visual of trey running around on the stage to first get to the drums and then back to his mic.

        Set You Soul Free had some amazing parts. Mercury>Light was the peak of the night for myself. Trey remarked how it felt like a hometown show because of how close it is to Vermont. Wow.

     We tried to do the post show Lot but there was nothing going on. We got back to the room and the Sox game was still on, ending at 1:44. That is way too late for a baseball game.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today: Phish, Live at the Lemonwheel, Aug 15th and 16th, 1998

     Hello everyone. I hope you are doing well as we fly head long into September. It’s almost the Ides of September.  I am doing well after spending a whole year in the beautiful state of Vermont. I was crushed and heartbroken when Phish cancelled Curveball. We just got breezed though security when my friend got a text from someone working at the fest saying it was cancelled.

     But I am not here to write about the shenanigans that occurred after the non-fest (you will have to wait until 2038 for that). No, I am here to discuss a much more successful festival, one tucked far far away in the furthest reaches of the US. I am talking about Phish’s Lemonwheel Festival. So without a moment to waste, Kempepedia presents It Was 20 Years Ago Today, Phish Live at the Lemonwheel Festival, August 15^th and 16^th, 1998.

     After attending Clifford Ball and Great Went, no way I was missing this. My crew rolled up. It was myself, WD, PD, and AA. We rented an SUV because no one had a big enough vehicle. Our plan was to drive up to Connecticut and stay at my friend’s apartment overnight and then go the fest the next day. The first mistake made was me leaving the sock with all the goodies I had in it. So we had to meet up with him before we left town. Still not sure how we did that pre cell phone. We also meet up with CW and his crew

   A few hours later we are in Maine. I am riding shotgun and WD is driving. I wake up from a nap and see WD is like 15 miles per hour over the speed limit. We had hot boxed a few hours earlier and had stuff on us. I asked him to slow down and his response was, “I just want to get to the festival.” Not 5 minutes later we round a corner and there is a Maine state police cruiser. He pulls us over and immediately says he smells weed.

     He threatens to search the entire car unless we voluntarily hand our stuff over. I had bud in an amazing jar I just got the spring before from a glass blower in Seattle when I went to visit there for 4/20. I also lost a bubbler I had just bought at MMP the week before. I also had shrooms on me which was the biggest deal by far. He wrote us up and let us on our way. I asked why he wasn’t taking us in and replied we cooperated and advised me to buy my drugs at the festival. I know realize most of the arrests were just to make money for the state. Mission accomplished.

     We went on our unmerry way and finally got into the festival. We waited longer than we did for The Went, which was longer than the wait for Clifford Ball. This increasing wait would continue for me. IT was a 16 journey of hitting traffic on the state route at 6 am and turning off our car at midnight. We got into Lemonwheel after dark had fallen and started set up our stuff. A brief but hard downpour occurred.  We did not get wet because WD, for all his bs with the close encounter of the worst kind, had engineered an amazing tarp canopy that I can not begin to give justice to. I remember telling myself empahatically it was all worth it to get to the festival. I didn't let it ruin my festival at all. Stuff like that, builds character. And wisom.

This was the first show of the Lemonwheel festival. SOAM was played by request for an eight-year-old boy named Sam Jarvis. Cities included Sneakin’ Sally teases and, along with Halley’s Comet, included alternate lyrics relating to the concert grounds. Gumbo included a Tweezer Reprise-esque jam. Sanity was played for the first time since Halloween 1996 (140 shows). Bowie included a lengthy intro and Mission: Impossible theme teases. After Tweezer Reprise, Trey made a long announcement thanking people for coming and remarked on the fun and joy of the summer concert festivals. He said that there would be some more music, played by the light of candles made that day by fans. The ensuing “ambient jam” was in the style of Brian Eno and was nearly an hour long and included Albert teases from Trey.

The Mike’s opener was fantastic. The transistion into Simple was something to behold. I really, really, reminded myself how incredible the fest was and how it was worth the arrest. The Gumbo has some nice almost Tweezer teases in it but they reward us with the real thing after a Sanity! The concert field, with all the people with the torches was still one of the coolest things I have ever scene. CW had a near religious experience and he was sober.

Fish alluded to Terrapin (“a love song about a turtle”) after a long HYHU intro but instead led the band into Sexual Healing. Antelope included Sexual Healing teases in the intro and a reference to “Bob Weaver” instead of Marco Esquandolas in the lyrics. 2001 contained Crosseyed and Painless and Super Bad teases from Trey. WMGGW returned for its first appearance since February 26, 1997 (103 shows). A fireworks display took place behind the stage in the jam out of Hood. The jam also featured Fish on trombone. Baby Elephant Walk was played for the first time since December 1, 1992 (514 shows).

More awesomeness. Third set is one of my all time favorites. It has it all. Funny phish, dance party phish, Gamehenge, and a song from the White Album.

I distinctly remember W telling me to write down Baby on the setlist. Because I used to write them down on paper, like a caveman

   One last thing. We were driving back and stopped at a rest stop. I was driving and walked to the building to where the restrooms were. PD went to the portapotties on the parking lot. I wasn’t paying attention and just drove away. Without PD in the car. I have no idea why I didn’t check or what my thought process was at the time. I just know this occurred. 5 miles down the road aA wakes up because I go over rumble strips as we approached a toll booth. He asks” Where is PD?”  We then realized I had left him at rest stop. If E Z Pass had existed then, A might not have woken up until Shenevus, New York.

When we finally got back to the rest stop, he was just chilling out on the curb of the parking lot. I’m sure he was bewildered and pissed. He didn’t kick my ass when we got there, I definitely remember that. No cell phones, at a rest stop15 hours from your home. Back on the frontier.
